Olives and Country Air in the Sabina

Just as the temperature has to be right for the perfect olive oil, a genuine experience of the Italian countryside requires wandering a little off the beaten track. TRF visits the unspoiled Sabina region only a stone's throw from Rome in the nearby province of Rieti, where the olive oil has a reputation as amongst the best.

“The whole Mediterranean, the sculpture, the palm, the gold beads, the bearded heroes, the wine, the ideas, the ships, the moonlight, the winged gorgons, the bronze men, the philosophers- all of it seems to rise in the sour, pungent taste of these black olives between the teeth. A taste older than meat, older than wine. A taste as old as cold water.” Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990) Prospero’s Cell (1945)

Lure of the simple life :-

My first glance from the train of the gently rolling hills, thickets and sun-baked soils offered a promising day out of the city – just half an hour’s journey from Rome – the only disappointment being the trip back home to the chaos of the city in the evening.

Once deep inside the Sabina, you might be forgiven for thinking you had been transported to Tuscany Villas or Umbria to enjoy rows of olive trees, vineyards and sweeping green valleys. Traffic passes rarely through the villages, buses instead follow the early morning/evening flow of commuters travelling to and from Rome. These are often Romans, who have taken advantage of the (sadly temporary) reprieve in Rome’s escalating property prices to move to a countryside location within close reach of the city.

Once abandoned farmhouses have been brought back to life and new, warm-coloured villas blend in with the landscape, leaving plenty of green expanses and panoramic views. Visitors are often hikers – or European holidaymakers – with a possibility of hiring a car or a bike for the less fit . An ample selection of B&Bs and agriturisms (country holidays) are available offering an unforgettable stay for those who wish to escape to an uncontaminated paradise.

A typically charming Sabina village: Selci Sabino :-

The area is better known abroad than in Rome, my guide explains, as we visit Selci Sabino, one of a handful of locations gaining a keen following abroad. English expat Miranda Goodman is originally from Hathersage, Derbyshire. She fell in love with the Sabina’s peace and tranquillity after spending 25 years in Rome and now runs a shop selling local handicrafts as well as an art gallery, where she provides information for tourists and exhibits the work of local artists. Miranda is clear that she would not want Sabina to become “another Tuscany”, whose popularity has come at the cost of its character, yet is keen to let people know – especially Rome-dwellers – what the Sabina region has to offer.

Selci first appears in the written sources in 1072, and it seems to have changed little since. Its name is derived from the Latin word Silex, or flint, referring to the quarries which used to dot the area, owned by the Orsini and Cesi families as well as the Holy See. Within its meandering streets you can admire the mediaeval stone slabs outside the church of St Salvatore, patron saint of the village.Nearby, the Cathedral of Vescoviò is well worth a visit, located within the site of ‘Forum Novum’, where excavations by archaeologists from the British School at Rome (Vince Gaffney, Helen Patterson and Paul Roberts) have confirmed the importance of the area in ancient times.

LG Electronics bags Dhs20 million facilities orders from MEPStar

Global digital leader LG Electronics today confirmed that it had won orders totally valued at Dhs20 million for outfitting over 360 villas in the ambitious Jumeirah Golf Estates project in Dubai.

An agreement to this effect was signed this week between LG Electronics, MEP Star, the main MEP contractor for the project, and Fortune International Trading, distributors for LG commercial air-conditioners in the UAE. The first order – valued at US$2 million – is a significant win for LG and represents the single-largest order in this segment.

MEP Star are at the top of their game and hence, working alongside them, gives us the important opportunity to further underline our expertise in this segment.”

Fortune International will be providing their full support team, design and maintenance to ensure that customers receive the best solution package and after sales support.

Mr. Adam Wade said that the Jumeirah Golf Estate was one of the most prestigious projects and required total commitment from everyone involved.

“Due to the scale of the project, we want to partner with nothing but the best in the business.LG has a proven track record in handling large-scale projects and bringing them on board for this project makes perfect business sense,” he added.

Whispering Pines is a distinctive gated community of designer villas offering commanding views over the Fire and Earth golf courses at the Jumeirah Golf Estates.

The Tuscany Villas, with authentic stone facades and terracotta tiled pitched roofs, enjoy extensive, fully landscaped gardens and aesthetically designed swimming pools.
